Crash Victim Simulator (CVS) Model

An early objective of the research program at NHTSA was to develop the capability of computer simulation of an occupant in a vehicle crash.  Computer simulation would reduce the need for human and animal tests to determine how to interpret measurements made by crash dummies.  In addition, computer simulation would assist in reconstructing crashes to determine the cause of injuries and how to prevent them.  By 1982, a reliable program was developed for NHTSA by Fleck and Butler of Calspan.  It was called the CVS Model.  Subsequently, USAF research at the Armstrong Aerospace Medical Laboratory continued development of the model for application to crew ejection from aircraft.  The Air Force model was named the Articulated Total Body Model (ATB).  Subsequently the model has been referred to as CVS, ATB or CVS/ATB.  A summary of the model describes its capabilities and data requirements.  The documentation for the model is provided in the table below.  The first 4 reports document the CVS model, and the next 3 document the ATB model. A post processor called "VIEW" displays the occupant and vehicle component motion at discrete time steps that can be made into a video of the motion.  The documentation of VIEW is shown in reports 8 and 9.  Finally, input data sets for occupants of various sizes can be created using the "GEBOD" program which is documented in Reports 10 and 11. Input data for the Hybrid III Dummy is contained in Report 12.
